Frequently asked questions

Is the software really free?

Yes. Forever, for any school in Timor-Leste — public or private. The Of Timor group covers the engineering, hosting and support costs. The pledge is on the /sponsored/ page.

What costs money?

Only optional physical things. $5 per branded NFC + QR keycard, and $10/student/year if you want the bus + meals service. The 22 software modules and both apps are always free.

Do we need our own servers?

No. We host you on a private school site at .students.oftimor.com. The servers are in Timor-Leste, encrypted, with nightly backups.

What about data privacy?

Data is hosted on enterprise-grade cloud infrastructure (SOC 2 / ISO 27001 compliant) and encrypted in transit and at rest. Per-role access means teachers see their classes, parents see their children, headmasters see their school — nobody sees more. Every login and edit is logged. Parents can request export or deletion of their child’s record at any time. We never sell or share data with third parties.

Is Tetum first-class?

Yes. Every screen, every notification, every report — in Tetum or English. Parents pick their language in their own profile, so a Tetum-speaking grandparent and an English-speaking parent can share a child.

What if our school has no Wi-Fi?

Teachers mark attendance offline in the app; it syncs when signal returns. The Parent app works on patchy 3G. The web admin panel is the only thing that needs steady internet, and most headmasters use it from home.

What devices do we need?

Any Android phone from the last 5 years. The Parent + Teacher apps are tuned for budget hardware — they run smoothly on $80 phones with 2GB RAM. Headmasters use any laptop or tablet for the web admin.

What if my school already uses Eskooly / Edmodo / pen-and-paper?

We import rosters from any spreadsheet (CSV or XLSX), and we ship a migration guide for each major incumbent. Most schools migrate in an afternoon.

Can a parent message a teacher directly?

Yes, through the Parent app. Identities are not shared (no phone numbers exchanged), and the conversation is logged for safeguarding. Teachers can mute the channel out of hours.

Who owns the data?

The school owns it. We are the operator. Schools can export their full data at any time, in CSV or JSON. If a school chooses to leave, we delete our copy on request.

Is there a phone number I can call for help?

Yes — WhatsApp +670 (full number on /contact/) during working hours, Mon-Fri 8am-5pm Timor time. For urgent safeguarding issues, email [email protected] with URGENT in the subject.

Can the MoE see our school’s data?

Only if you opt in. The optional National MoE dashboard shows aggregated trends across opted-in schools — never individual children, never one named school’s data without that school’s explicit consent.
